Installing LanSchool Student on iOS

Installing LanSchool Student on iOS

Overview

With the LanSchool Student app for iOS devices, teachers using the LanSchool Teacher Console can engage and interact with students using iPhones and iPads in the classroom.

Due to the design of Apple iOS devices, not all LanSchool features and capabilities are available on these devices. Features like screen monitoring and limit web are not available, but messaging, voting, and show teacher screen are available and very useful.
LanSchool Student requires iOS 9.0 or greater.

Installing the LanSchool Student App on iOS

  1. From the device, download and install the LanSchool Student from the App Store
  2. Once installed on the device, open the LanSchool Student application.

  3. The app will open and show options for viewing Class Details, Submitting a Question, or using the built-in web browser.

Configuring LanSchool Student on iOS

If the teacher and student are connected to the same wireless network, set the the student devices's channel to match the teacher's channel.

If the teacher and student are on different VLANs or subnets, the student's device will need to be configured to connect to the LanSchool Connection Service (LCS) in addition to being put on the teacher's channel.

Channel Configuration

  1. Open the LanSchool Student app on the student's iOS device.
  2. Tap on Class
  3. Enter a channel number (1-16000) that the device should reside on.

In most cases, the student's channel should be set to match the teacher's channel. If the devices are shared between multiple classrooms, set the devices to a "home" channel and create class lists to determine which devices should be in which channel.
Once on the same channel and network as the teacher, the device appear in the Teacher Console:

Connecting iOS Student to LCS

  1. In the iOS Settings app, scroll down until you see the LanSchool Student app and tap on that icon.

  2. Scroll down and tap on Enable Connection Server.

  3. Once enabled, input the static IP address of your LanSchool Connection Server (LCS).
  4. The next time the app starts, the LanSchool Student app will communicate with the LCS instead of a peer-to-peer broadcast.

Using LanSchool with iOS Devices

There are three indicator icons in the top right corner of the Student that will show the current status of the app.
  1. The icon on the far right will be displayed when the Student connects to a Teacher computer.
  2. The icon second from the right is displayed when the Student is connected to the Connection Server.
  3. The third icon is displayed when this Student is added to a Class List by the Teacher.
The Class button on the left is used to display class and device information. This is the information displayed by default when the app starts up. It includes a Channel button which can be used to change the channel currently used to communicate with the Teacher (steps above).

The Question button is used to send a question to the Teacher.

The Browser button will bring up a web browser and the Info button will bring up this window displaying instructions, version, and Teacher information.

Pressing the Version button on the bottom of this window will toggle the display between the Version, Build, and IP Address of this Student.

To run in Trial Mode, go to the main Settings app on the device and scroll down the list of applications and select Student. Then toggle the Trial Mode selector to ON. You may now join a LanSchool classroom running in Trial Mode over the Demo Channel. To exit Trial Mode, return to the Settings menu and turn Trial Mode to OFF.
