Installing LanSchool Student for macOS

The following instructions will assist you in installing LanSchool on a student's Mac:

  1. Copy the student.dmg from the customer download to the student's machine.

  2. Double click the student.dmg to mount it.

  3. Double click on lanschool_student.pkg

  4. Read the security notice and click Continue.

  5. Click Continue.

  6. Read the software license agreement.  Click Continue.

  7. Click Agree in the license agreement confirmation.

  8. Specify the Teacher Channel you wish this student to be connected to.  If you are wishing to customize the installation, select the "Check to configure advanced options" box and click Continue.  If you do not wish to customize the LanSchool student installation, you may click Continue and skip to step 13.

  9. Select any advanced installation settings you wish to modify.  Click Continue.

  10. If you wish to restrict the wireless networks the student can connect to, select "Enable SSID Whitelisting."  Once enabled, enter the desired SSIDs and click the Add button.  If your student machines do not connect through a wireless network, leave the "Enable SSID Whitelisting" un-checked.  Click Continue.

  11. If you wish to connect this LanSchool student to a LanSchool Connection Server, select the "Connect Student to Connection Server" box and then enter the LanSchool Connection Server's IP address in the "Connection Server Address" box.  If you are using the default peer to peer discovery model, leave "Connect Student to Connection Server" box un-checked.  Click Continue.

  12. If you wish to enable Password Security Mode, select the "Password Secure Mode", enter the LanSchool teacher consoles' password in the "Password" field, and then re-enter it in the "Confirm password" field. Click Continue.

  13. Select whether or not to allow anonymous and confidential problem reports to be sent to LanSchool.  Click Continue.

  14. Click Install.

  15. Enter the User Name and Password for an administrator account on this Mac.

  16. If this student machine is running macOS 10.13 or newer, you will need to perform additional steps grant LanSchool the permissions it requires to perform several features. For instructions on approving these for a large number of devices at once, see Granting macOS Privacy Approvals for LanSchool Using an MDM.

Apple's latest operating system macOS 11.0 (Big Sur) prevents 3rd party software from installing Profiles on the system. In an effort to help schools that may not currently be using MDM, another step was added to the LanSchool Student approval wizard to provide a concise way to configure the profile installation.

  17. Click Close.
